GROWTH:  December daydreams (2022)

I created an interactive installation as a love letter to my queer friends in order to express my gratitude for providing me the courage to grow. When the audience touches the black board with HIGH FIVE written on it, the music playing software is directly triggered, and when the audience raises their hands, the ultrasonic sensor in front of the black board is triggered, triggering the entire system of the sculpture, including the rainbow LEDs inside the sculpture and the simple projection setup.

This tree, which sparkles with rainbow light, can be a sign of myself or any queer. We can shine with a rainbow light because of the help of our friends. The shadow disc within is a depiction of time, particularly projected to demonstrate how the seasons have left us with gifts. To indicate the passage of time, the shadow discs resemble a pointer with a branch sprouting in various forms. This piece is also devoted to the foremothers of the feminism movement, particularly in China. We are able to strive to be ourselves in an atmosphere that is not very welcoming to the queer community because of their daring and fearless efforts and support.

Friend:

I suddenly dreamed last night

Eventually, we found ourselves in a wintry wood.

Turned into

a tree, and a tree, and a tree…

In isolation from one another

silence

The wind and the snow whistling through our midst

So remote and frigid

Yes, but…

As time has progressed,

Look deep underneath

Our roots clasp each other closely

A repeated refrain of "They won't fall, they won't fall"

I swore to myself

Just when will spring arrive?

When does the trunk first arise?

When will the rainbow appear?

I'm still waiting

I'm still waiting
